THE MISSION OF THE MICRO-SATELLITE DEMETER

The aim of the DEMETER programme is to launch a micro-satellite to investigate EM signals related to earthquakes and eruptions. The satellite is expected to be launched in 2004. This programme is managed by CNES(Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales), and will help scientists in evaluating and mitigating natural risks. The programme consists of two parts, a micro-satellite and a scientific programme.

The orbit of the micro-satellite will be nearly sun-synchronous, circular and polar with an altitude of  750 km.

The DEMETER programme will study the electromagnetic signals produced by seismic and volcanic activities, and their propagation from the ground to the ionosphere.

The programme is  based mainly on two complementary approaches :

ü The recording of the EM field onboard of the satellite over the Earth (http://demeter.cnrs-orleans.fr/).

ü The recording of the electric, magnetic and EM fields on the ground in some specific seismic and volcanic sites.
